Let me expand upon a few of my ideas and allow you to see my vision of Student Government here at Northern in the Future:

Reform:The system which we currently have in place is a good framework to start with. However, it needs to be streamlined such that the ASNMU Governing Board is connected to House and Hall Governments. Representatives should attend some meetings. A general assembly of house and hall government members, as well as all ASNMU Committee and Board members should be called at least once a semester.

Communication: Students need to know what ASNMU is and what it's functions are. Letters and posters should be sent to all house and hall government members to take back to their respective houses or groups. Active publicity and recruiting should take place all year so that seats don't go unfilled. Finally, issues should be debated at town meetings or forums held at various sites on campus. Let's get people involved in Student Government.

Active Representation: Representatives have been working for students for a long time, but have they been speaking to the needs of the student s, or have they been working to accomplish thier own agenda? Student Government should take a stand on each important issue here at Northern. So often issues pass right by the students. Forums, Surveys, Campus Mailings, as well as running questionaires in dorm lobbies would help out emensely in this respect. If student government works to represent the views of the students here at Northern, students will respect and become involved in student government.

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/03/03 19:27 by FKRIEGER
>:: Frank S. Krieger Ministry of Propaganda

That does all sound very nice, but how will this be achived?

I could (and in the past I may have...), promised beer vending machines. But can I deliever? Fellow Party members, I think not.

HARD FACTS! Thats what will get you noticed. (Name recognition will however get you a seat...).

But on a serious note Nick, I do like what you suggest but really intrested on how you will do it.

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/03/04 10:26 by NVIVIAN
>:: Nick Vivian

I believe that all of these goals and be met by doing about two things. First, an agenda must be set. If we have a plan to guide the Governing Board, we will have a clear focus on what we need to achieve. We can map out our dates for forums and townmeetings, appoint a publicity chair who will specially target events for P.R., and build a good repport withthe leaders of this campus.

Second, if the representatives on this board want to represent the students of this university in a fair and accurate manner, they must put the time in. Meetings are not hard to run. Forums are not that hard to organize. Handing out surveys and questionaires in the dorms? Yes, it all takes time, but together, doing the job that the students elected us to, we must take the time to do it.

Frank, people make promises every year that are not fulfilled. But these aren't promises; They are goals. I'm not looking to overhaul parking or food services, I'd like to work to make student government more "student friendly," and more representative of the student body here at NMU.

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/03/04 13:34 by KMARCOTT >::

I happen to think Nick's goals are achievable. Most of the structures needed to implement such goals are already in place. It's simply a matter of networking between student organizations and Residence Hall Governments. Increased communication and shared governance are all that are needed. There are committees of students being assembled as a result of the Student Leadership Forum (can't recall if that's the exact name) that was held several weeks ago. Some of these problems will be addressed by the students who comprise these committees.

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/03/04 15:48 by SSIMULA
>:: come to my new line called maryjane

a couple points: 1. i think if we are to begin truly reforming government as nick and i hope we need to first stop being partisan if government members can simply look at student problems not at their party's preferential point of view but at what is best for the student that would be great. frank to address your question i am hoping to look at achieving some sort of answer to the question: Why id public safety so aggressive in issuing parking tickets to commuter students without giving them a fair opportunity to understand parking ordinances and such on campus? I am concerned about the fact that i have seen at various times what seem to be coordinated efforts by public safety to issue out tickets on certain days (quotas?) and to be honest it ticked me off. e.g. giving out of state visitors parking tickets How are they suppposed to know the rules?

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/03/04 15:52 by FKRIEGER
>:: Frank S. Krieger Ministry of Propaganda

I also can think that the Libertarian Party will one day take over Congress but not without a ton of work.

Although a President can propose all they want, the Rep's make the motions. Since there is no way for a President or Vice-President to choose whom will fill the Rep. offices it is possible that the Board my be ineffective again.

I am not implying that this will happen, again, but would not it be really "Groovy" is the prospective President and Vice-Presidents all sit down with the prospective Reps and discuss what they want from the Board?

It is a sad fact that the Reps do not get paid. There is no incentive beyond a want to serve your fellow Students or to serve your own intrests. Alais the legacy of past Boards mistakes. We switched from paycheck Reps to paycheck Execs. At least under the old system you could be docked.

Let us hope the want to serve the Students will prevail...

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/03/05 09:20 by RKAMMERE
>:: RMK But Penguin, I'm one of the good guys.

Let me just take a moment here to mention that most of the petitions that have been picked up were for president or vice-president. No one seems to want to be a rep, which is sad, since reps are the ones who really do the work and hold the power. If I were one of the bunch of people running for president, I think I would be encouraging people I know to run for rep positions, so that I would know I would have a full board and would be able to get something done next year.

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/03/05 13:36 by SSCHAEDI
>:: Sara Schaedig ASNMU Academics Rep./Student

Being a rep. is the place to be, which is one of the reasons that I did not run for president or vice last year even though many people had asked me to. I feel that I can accomplish much more for the students as a rep. Most legislation begins with the reps., we are the ones who do the work. I'm not saying that the president does not do anything important, but rather that the work that the reps. do effects the students in a more direct way. Usually the president is so busy with meetings and whatnot representing the student body that there is little time for anything else while the reps use their time to accomplish things for the student body which the president reports on to various people.

As for not being paid. That is not why I got into ASNMU. I'm in ASNMU because I want to do something other than sit on my butt and complain about things. I have stayed in ASNMU because I feel that I have helped the student body. I have always believed that if you want something then go work and get it instead of waiting for someone to hand it to you because most likely that is not going to happen. This is why I have been a rep for two years and if I could I would be one next year. I have given brief thought to quitting this past year because the working conditions were not that great, but it was a fleeting thought because how can something get better if everyone leaves it. Quitting was not the answer and neither is saying that ASNMU is unaffective and so I will not become involved in such an organization because the ONLY way to change things is to be involved. So please don't ask me why ASNMU does not have a full board, but look to yourselves and don't say it's because the reps are not paid because why should anyone be paid to help themselves?

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/03/05 14:02 by NVIVIAN
>:: Nick Vivian

Frank, I think that you have an excellent idea in your suggestion that the President and Vice-President actually sit down and communicate. It would do wonders for rapport and morale.

It would also help in understanding the agenda and goals which the President or Vice-President would like to see accomplished. And if nothing else, maybe it would encourage the Representatives to work together as a team, rather then as seperate individuals.

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/03/05 14:12 by CMANN
>:: Farmboy Why is it that happiness is a dream?

Nick, the constitution provides for a "State of Union" type address by the President at the beginning of each semester. However, that power was not utilized in the recent past. I think that many of the issues being discussed are good, but we must realize that most of these ideas are already in place to be accomplished. The lack is just in the Membership of the Board. 6 cannot do the work of 16, but we must try. I think that all of the Board will agree that our first priority is to gather enough people to have a full board next year.

Chris Mann,
ASNMU President.

===============================================================================

It was me. I had a super secret agenda going on. I forced the Board to stray from the path and pursue objectives that were of no value.

I did this with the help of sublimal messages, tainted Coke products, and good old fashion Blackmail.

Do you all remember that super secret housing committee that Ryan sat on? Why do you think it was so secret?

Because it is in reality the committee IS the puppet master. It is a twisted and evil dopplaganger of the ASNMU Governing Board. It's charter was to undo everything good the Board did. By mixing Masionic, Greek, Democratic, Repubican, and Food Service out came this monster. And I was the planted agent that did their dirty work. They are the Majestic Twelve.

But back to reality,(the e-conf?), I see almost everyone that comments here, with the possible exception of Steve, and I am willing to discuss any idea. I have yet to submit my papers, but what harm cam talking to me do?

I am not a closed minded person. Nor one that normally prejudges, so instead of trying to sway the twenty or so people that review the e-conf, open it up!

A question that was asked earlier, but was not answered was "What has ASNMU done to fill it's board?" While I am not aware of there having been any advertisements made in the North Wind there was a considerable effort put into the Student Leader Forum that was held shortly before Spring Break. After that forum many RA's came into the office to ask for materials to post in their houses about ASNMU and how to get involved. Other things have been done, like posting the openings outside the office, but the forum was the biggest and most affective effort. I have only referred to what has been done this semester though

As you know, a student government represents the students interests and if the students are not interested then it does not matter what the government does because there is no interest. There is a very old saying that is very true: You can lead the horse to the water (you can even bring the water to the horse), but you CAN'T make it drink. As a member of the Academic Affairs committee you should be asking that question of yourself too because you are a part of the board even if you don't sit in a board position. We all need to work together, not tear each other apart. Instead of questioning ASNMU suggest things and help in every way possible so something can be accomplished instead of demolished.

My sincerest appologies to you Sara. I didn't mean to bash anybody. I guess I am just frustrated with the current situation. The four current Representatives are doing what they can to keep ASNMU running as efficiently as possible. I think that is admirable. However, to effectively represent the large student body here on campus, we need more people involved, and this is where I get frustrated. Perhaps ASNMU should hire its own recruiter like the Armed Services does. Perhaps postings should be done.

Or perhaps this situation is so frustrating because we are caught in a "Catch 22." Students won't become involved until they are recruited, yet we really don't have the resources to recruit unless they become involved.

As for the question of "Can a person run for two positions?" It is my understanding, and logic that; no, a person can not. I would think that it would be common sence that you cannot. But when we have people trying to veto an impeachment I am not about to say that anyone has that sence, but I hope that I may be wrong. What would happen if the person was elected to two positions? Then what happens? It would be a big mess, and the person would have to campaign in two constituances. All of which would cause more work for everyone involved. I REALLY do not see the need to send anything to the ASJ unless someone pushes very hard for ASNMU to do so.

Vice president: Rebecca Weigand and Jessica Gurn. College of Ed, Behavioral Sciences, and Human Services: Jon Barch. College of Business: Frank Kreiger. Down Campus rep: Nathan Leach and Matt Meyer. Off campus reps: Kelly Myers, Steve Simula and Torrie Eddy. Also, I believe that Anna Marie Cream is intending to run a write-in campaign for the position of Family Housing Rep. All other slots are without candidates, which means they are also open for industrious people who want to get their friends to write them in. The candidate forums are tomorrow in Cat Trax from 11:30-1:00 and in the UC atrium from 7:00-9:00. Come find out who these people are, and don't forget to vote next week.

I would like to address my displeasure in regards to the attack mr. mann and mr. bergh made on Jason Burton after the platform conference. Sirs, if it was I that you had a problem with, please feel free to address me. Attacking Mr. Burton is bad politics. True leaders of the student body follow up on issues presented before them, such as the questions that I posed to mr. mann and mr. bergh. I am greatly appalled in the lack of response from the two gentlemen I have mentioned after my repeated e-mails to them.

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/03/29 15:56 by APAVEGLI
>:: adam paveglio student

To speak of it briefly,

Mr. Mann and Mr. Bergh approached Mr. Burton after the platform discussion to attack him because of my e mailings to them. First, Mr. Mann and Mr. Bergh did not mention who this person was to Mr. Burton . I suppose that the character the two government authorities were referring to was me, although they did not mention my name during their discussion with Mr. Burton. Why badger the canidate when it is I that they should be talking to?

My e-mailings to them questioned their politics. Evidently, neither ASNMU member have good enough social skills to e-mail me back or they are complete snobs. My e mail to Mr. Mann simply stated was this: could he be a little less general with me when it comes to what is wrong with ASNMU. In the Northwind two papers ago (I believe), he generalized on what was wrong with the communication between ASNMU and students. It was full of rhetoric...just explaining that there was a lack of communication... but of on no means of solving the problem or how it came to be. My point is this, any person who becomes president better stick to a very short list of goals, with topics of conversation clear and to the point.

Nick VIvian is close when it come to outlining, but likes to dilute his objectives in drawn out paragraphs.

I was not at the platform stand, but from what i hear there were many good points brought up. Unfortunately, so many problems were addressed that there was nothing left to debate about. A good example of this is when it came to Mr. Burton to say his final thoughts. He didn't have an y because Vivian pulled an ASNMU presidential address speech by including everything...instead of outlining what he would do about a few issues.

My e mail to Mr. Bergh was somewhat different than what I have stated above. Two papers ago I saw his wonderful article about his contributions to the student body with the 13 groups he has been involved with. He went on to explain in the article how getting involved in organizations helped him meet new people. Also, he considers his servic es greatly appreaciated to this university. Well excuse me! Joseph Bergh was so involved in his organizations in previous years that he failed to communicate with any person from his dorm household. It seems that he considers a person worthy only if they associate with him through one of his outstanding groups. I repeatedly asked for his input, but have received nothing!

Both Mr. Mann and Mr. Bergh showed me that they are only concered about what their peers in the government and organizations have to say. I' m sorry, I thought being a member of ASNMU would make a person want to reach out to the students, to listen to and respond to their concerns. I guess I was wrong. Mr. Mann WAS right in a sense in the most recent Northwind in regards to why he isn't running for president, "the enormous amount of bullshit."

So, ladies and gentlemen, whoever ends up getting the open seats in ASNMU better take issues one at a time. Plus, just because ASNMU has a n office in the U.C. doesn't mean that the students can only find them theere! Every ASNMU member should be mixing it up with the students , on and off campus, in order to gain support for the issues.. ahhh it is not a simple task. Neither is life.

Although I'm not sure what to think about the majority of your commentary Adam, I do have to clarify a point or two. I am wondering how you got your factual information since you weren't at the candidate debate? Had you been there, you would have realized that upon closing statements, along with Mr. Ingles, I deferred allowing Mr. Burton to speak first . He elected not to, and Eric spoke first. Again, I asked Mr. Burton if he would like to say anything, and again he chose not to. So I did what any good candidate would do and talked to the points of my campaign. Whether that was an address that covered everything on this campus is debatable, but if you were there, you could have judged that for yourself.

If you were to look back a few posts, Mr. Paveglio, you would see that Bridgette was appointed vice president a few weeks ago. I have also read some of your messages to Mr. Bergh and Mr. Mann and have found them to be threatening and harrassing. As it looks to me, you are upset that Joseph wouldn't be your pal when he lived in your house, which is certainly no reason to threaten him.

I am not sure which shots you feel student government is calling. This is not a competition between the government and the students. There are no shots to call. Though I welcome your opinion on what we are doing, I woudl respect it more if you were actually at the events you are complaining about.

To the previous addresser. How about leaving a name? Anyways, I'm glad to hear Joseph's input on all of this. I figured since he is involved in 13 different groups and organizations, he would have good communication skills. I guess this assumption is wrong. I still think ASNMU keeps themselves in the boundaries of their office, unwilling to go out into the student body for input.

I was recently made aware of Mr. Vivian's goals and it sounds like the government might MINGLE with the student body. Wow! Who could ever imagine such a thing.

I wasn't looking for a personal relationship with Bergh, I was just looking for him to communicate with SOME of his housemates. You see, I'm not really fond of somebody stacking their resume without having great communication skills with the people. If you are in office you better open your arms to everyone. Adam,

Obviously you are not very involved in anything, or you would realize how time-consuming having an actual life can be. As far as Mr. Bergh 'stacking' his resume, I am wondering, are you an employer? Someone who has nothing constructive to say but is very good at insult and insinuation does not make a very good boss. I bet you have no knowledge of that, however. The truth is that ASNMU can make as many resolutions and garner as much student opinion as possible, but it wil likely not change the mind of the administration. Sure, there have been some problems with student government this year, but the real issue lies in the fact that ASNMU should be given more input into University decisions. The Academic Senate has some of the greatest say, and they have done some great things recently, but having an ASNMU representative on committees is sometimes nothing more than student representation for the sake of it. This is where the issues lie, in my opinion. Do you even know enough about it to form an opinion?

It will take only as much time as the petitions took, plus there should be more ppl sending them around. I am totally willing to organize this. Any other ideas?

First of all, I resent being accused of being the "Administration's Little Buddy". If you did not understand my position at the debate Eric, I believe it involved sitting down and working with everyone involved rather then lynching top university officials and burning down Cohodas.

Second, it is important that you get your facts straight about the credit card issue. The contract with First USA involves only names of faculty, alumni, and friends. It does not involve the names or addresses of students.

Students names are given unintenionally in a couple of other ways. There is a directory that publishes all of our names and addresses and sell s them to independent companies. Additionally, the FEDs compile a list of anybody who applies for Financial Aid and sells it to other interested parties. It is not a crime.

So before anyone goes off the deep end here, please, consult some sources that may actually have the correct facts.

yeah, I am pissed about the credit card thing. I actually got a first-usa card during that mailing. worst card I've ever had. highest fees, smallest wiggle-room, and highest interest. I recently (actually before I heard about what the U had done) cut up the card and closed my account. after my experiences, I would strongly reccomend that other students who picked up one of these cards do the same.

My information came in part from the Dean of Students Office. And for your information, I have not given up on the TLC initiative. The truth is, the administration can do whatever it would like to do. i.e. Flat Rate Tuition. However, rather then alienate ourselves anymore than we already have been, we should seek to sit down, get the actual facts, consult the actual people involved, and work toward a proper solution.

And by the way, I have a whole law class that realizes the value of computers and wouldn't mind the program being instituted here.

hey let me say this, I have been getting a lot of feed back from students on campus about asnmu and they have either said who, what, why.

I hope our new president as well as their fellow reps will answer this for them. it is not just putting letters in the northwind or shaking hands. it is about going the extra mile and giving somthing to the students like the things they want, but also giving them the things they don't want like lap tops, credit card companies and such. and Rhea what was up with that question on the ballot about the lap tops am I the only one who noticed that it seemed a little loaded?? who wrote it ..... could it be the administration. why does the man keep us down, as Bridget said'Burn them out and let the new order begin, so it is writen in the book of rage' We must not let them have an inch because then they will take a mile. already RA's peer through windows looking for the "happenings" already they sell us to people we don't know. next thing they will do is take our land and rape our mothers I will no longer stand for this. and I hope none of you will either.

If the newly elected members of ASNMU do not speak for the students they will not be doing their job. If the students vote down the comp proposal then we should try our best to get the issue defeated otherwise we will not be representing their interests. But we should also be informed Mr.Vivian gave me a little background info on the credit card issue i promise in the future not to jump the gun and i apologize for that. Yes, the administration can do what they want to. But they are elected as well. In fact, 2 seats on the B of C are up this November. If any students want to run for Board of Control, you have my support. I propose we use their election to show them who's boss.
1- hold debates to see who will really work in the best interests of the students and the university.
2- share our opinions with those of student groups at the other public universities in Michigan
3- mobilize the students to vote in the elections this November. We can kick them out if we don't like them

Due to an error in our direction of the calculation of the votes on both the increase for ASNMU and the SFC, the elections committee has asked for a retabulation. The new results take into account our original intent, which was to assume that those who voted not to continue allocation for an organization would also vote not to increase the allocation for that organization. Given that information, the new results are as follows:

ASNMU retains it's original allocation, but does not receive an increase. The SFC gets both the original allocation and an increase. For number totals, please contact me.
I am sorry for any inconvenience this error has caused.

I did.

Cast my spoiler votes for the year. God I hate the new Primary System...Not only do the voters now foot the bill, it allows people to vote off party and try to pull out the likely challengers...

I vote Democrat, don't like Fieger, so vote Ross, in effect attempting to block a favorable prospect from the ballot this Fall.

I wonder, does ANYONE vote for their party? Or do we all try that?

no, he'll just send them to one of those fancy private schools that ninety nine percent of us will NEVER be able to afford. and then he'll tell everyone how that's gonna show the triumph of the 'voucher' system. Keep free enterprise OUT of the public schools. it's bad enough the way it is, with the taxpayers in poor districts being unable to foot the bill for good schools. A profit driven corporation would never build a school where none of the population could pay their rates. The poor will just end up going without schooling, or end up stuck in a public schools system that's been stripped of everything by assholes like Engler.

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/08/06 12:47 by APAVEGLI
>:: adam paveglio I do not support varsity athletics

I think that the poor districts can't afford good education because the big industry has left to a better setting--where they will get a tax break or whatnot. What the hell can Engler do about that? Can he send out a proclamation that there must be urban renewel in the form of big companies...... I know that in Detroit Mayor Archer is trying to get thingsgoin again with the casinos---and with Illich building the new stadium (with a partial funding by taxes---hell, there's the problem---we endorsing athletes before OUR childrens' education.

I think it's more the kid's fault than the school's or the system's. If a kid wants to learn and succeed, he/she will. If a kid's home is failing to instruct a kid in how important personal responsibility in learning and life is, that kid is being set up for failure. Why do people often blame everything besides the one who has the greatest stake in the matter?

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/08/07 12:40 by EINGLES
>:: this is MY university

Engler got elected four years ago by knocking up his wife, he got elected 8 years ago by getting married. he does all these things to avoid opponants saying he's a big-fat dork. I think he has a vendetta against schools because his head got flushed down the toilet too ofter in middle school

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/08/07 15:39 by HKAPELLE
>:: Heather Kapeller-Wisniewski Steel Bars and Plexiglass

But...if a kid is "set up" for failure by his/her home life or living conditions, is that the kid's fault? Plus, if inner city schools (or any school, for that matter) is not allocated appropriate funds, the students will not be able to compete well with those students who go to schools that can afford new/newer books and the like.

===============================================================================

>:::The following added 1998/08/08 13:11 by RWICKSTR
>:: Roger Wickstrom piece of mined

I don't have any numbers in front of me, so what follows could be bunk.

I'd bet that inner-city schools get an equal portion, per pupil or student, as other smaller schools - if not more. If kids are being set up for failure at home, the problem - and solution - is inside the home, not the schools. Pouring tons of money into a student that has no interest in learning won't remediate the problem.

The Libertarians are indeed not running a canidate for Gov. It is important to Libertarians to obtain Major Party status in Michigan, this can only be done if the Libertarian Party gets 5% of the popular votes in the Gov. and Sec. of State race.

So the Libertarian Party of Michigan has decided to not run or indorce any person for these positions.

I have this odd feeling that once Proposal B is passed with a majority of "NOs" and that Fieger gets elected for Governor, why is it that the feeling of once Fieger steps into his first day in office he goes and overturns the Assisted Suicide proposal and makes it into a law? In other words, he would knock out the "NOs" vote and make it into an overall "YES".....remember that when you all go and cast your vote for Michigan's next Governor, that you might be putting in Dr. Kervorkian's lawyer in the office seat.

well, now that I've lost the michigan gubenatorial race, i must follow with my tradition. You see, I once ran for secretary of West Hall; I lost. So I ran for VP of NAE; I lost, so I ran for President of ASNMU; I lost, so I ran for Governor of Michigan; I lost (but it was soooo close, I think I'll demand a recount). Now, I must seek higher office, so I shall declare myself a candidate for the presidency of France.
