Why Take Students Seriously?
(No, Seriously?)
By the Editor of The...TRUTH
Because they make that fat paycheck possible, Judy!
That being said, we feel that a very firm "thank you" needs to be said to many of
the faculty and staff at Northern Michigan University, who are here not because it's the best paying
job in the world (it isn't) but because they actually give a darn. We are talking about those who
remember that this is a "school" and not a fortune 500 business.
Being a sincere educator and role model is an often thankless job. My most profound
experiences here, however, have been because of some damned good teachers. The ones who forced me
to think, while not shoving some propaganda down my throat. Those who showed me that even though the world
can really suck ass, I don't have to.
I think I can blame my awareness of this on one man, my first teacher here at NMU. He is no
longer around, but Michael Gowe (forgive me if I spelled that wrong, it's been a while) had a rare and
beautiful attitude about his job. He felt that we were the reason he was there, not the other way
around.
Maybe if some of the top level administrators got in the trenches a little
more, they'd see how far from the mark they've gotten. It's been so long since they were students
themselves, that they've lost sight of the purpose.
Come down from that tower Judy... ignore the cameras for once... and get to know
the students. You started off as a teacher a long time ago... did you do that for the money? I doubt it.
Prison is where a man might be forced into the experience of undesired man love, but attending NMU should not
be.
Judy, you will be visited by three ghosts. The ghost of Wild Bill, the ghost of
Clinton and the ghost of you long after the divorce and bankruptcy.....
