"SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT HERE..." THIRD TIME NOT CHARM; SNUBBED JOURNALIST SPEAKS OUT
By Ole Interim Editor-in-chief
Editor's note: Even though we have built our 5-year reputation on printing exclusively bogus stories on the front page of this publication, we feel that the issue being brought to light with the following story was serious enough to merit legitimate journalistic effort on the part of The...TRUTH staff, plus in a black way it's even kind of funny.
Unaccustomed as we are to serious journalism, we feel the details presented are absolute fact and we invite and challenge the reader to prove otherwise. Bryan Gentilini, characteristically pathological in his conscientious avoidance of even the appearance of wrongdoing, has avoided working on this issue in any capacity other than compiling factual data, to the detriment of layout and proofreading. As usual, Project E*L*F apologizes for any convenience this may cause.
Paul Stieber was the youngest editor-in-chief on record at the North Wind. In fact, Stieber, 20, was the same age as the newspaper he shepherded last year. Too young perhaps to understand the intricacies of interpersonal politics. Too young perhaps to successfully negotiate a snakepit of personalities. He himself admitted that he "didn't realize how influential the print medium--the North Wind--is." He admitted to mistakes. He dismissed the unethical printing of an April Fool's story in a serious section saying, "Unethical? Give me a break. We're a college newspaper, take a joke."
What possible chance would he have to avoid a blasphemous relationship between natural enemies--a free press and an elected political body? Especially when that relationship has existed at Northern Michigan University between The Associated Students of Northern Michigan University and The North Wind since Stieber was in high school and probably before?
What possible chance would he stand to avoid being sucked into a clique of journalists who may well be systematically suppressing outsiders?
When fate made Stieber editor-in-chief, he went with the flow. He himself admitted that at first he hated ASNMU President Greg Rathje saying: "I considered him a pompous cheeseball." Soon they became "the closest of friends," even meeting for dinner every week. Obviously Rathje had more to gain from Stieber's friendship than vice versa. It may have paid off when in March of last year, he ran unopposed for re- election to ASNMU's top spot, a fact that went unreported by the North Wind until five days before the election and too late for another candidate to step in.
But Rathje's apparent misuse of campus journalism and Stieber's meteoric rise to the top is only the latest event in a lineage of shady behavior by the student body's chief public opinion mouthpieces. Being a factual story, we must turn to the personal experiences and findings of one who has been present since the mid 80's. Be warned, his story makes what should be a Campus Hall of Fame seem like a Rogue's Gallery. The Strange Case of Mr. Bryan Gentilini
Bryan Gentilini began as an incoming freshman in the fall of 1985. He was elected to the ASNMU governing board as U.C. Quad representative in 1987. During his time on the board, one of his major projects was overhauling the Counselour and Advocate Programme on which former ASNMU president Al Keefer served with Gentilini. Keefer characterized his time on the board this way: "When I worked with Bryan on CAP...he ran it very professionally. There was not one problem. None. Ask anybody who was on the committee." Gentilini served until spring of 1989 when he lost his bid for ASNMU president to Britt Lindholm. It was here that Gentilini first ran afoul of Shana Hubbs. Gentilini felt it was a conflict of interest for her to serve as both Quad II rep to ASNMU and features editor of the North Wind.
Later in 1989, Gentilini became a staff writer for the North Wind and in April 1990 (with Ann Gonyea as Editor-in- chief) he applied for a junior reporter position and got it, even after turning down a senior reporter position. At that same time, Ted Slater was given the assistant news editor position with fewer journalism credits completed than Gentilini. Regardless, Gentilini said, "The best North Wind I've ever seen was under Ann Gonyea" due to low turnover. Gentilini covered the Academic Senate for three semesters, wrote an opinion column on the Senate's action regarding the infamous "NMU video" and drew praise from Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences Eugene Whitehouse, who said Gentilini "provided solid and objective reports of Senate actions...." On top in April, Shot down in May
Shana Hubbs resurfaced in April of 1991 when she was made editor-in-chief. Gentilini applied for the position of associate news editor. Joe Hall was continuing as sports editor. Paul Stieber, who had been hired as assistant sports editor as an incoming freshman (as had Joe Hall the year before him), perhaps felt there was little room for advancement in sports and applied for assistant news editor. Stieber was given the position. Hubbs told Gentilini, "I feel that you lack communication skills" but added that she wanted Gentilini to continue writing for them anyway. Gentilini interpreted this as an invitation to continue his "indentured servitude" for little compensation and declined. The Student Finance Committee sincerely applauded Gentilini's work when he told them he was leaving the North Wind. Ted Slater became news editor and was fired almost immediately. Chaos reigned during this period and when the dust finally settled in January of 1992 Stieber had been promoted to news editor and Joe Zyble had become managing editor.
Mr. Gentilini Goes to the Senate
In September of 1991 Gentilini applied for the Academic Senate and North Wind board of directors. The North Wind board (under chairman Paul White) approved his application to the board of directors easily, he was even selected to be vice chairman a month later, but he was turned down for Academic Senate by ASNMU in favor of "Panama" and Laura Engler. In December he reapplied for a vacant position on the Academic Senate and was approved by ASNMU's Appointments Committee by a 2-2 vote (tie broken in Gentilini's favor by President Pete Drever). In this discussion, his involvement with this paper was used against him by Mark Zyble (brother of Joe Zyble) even though in November of 1988 ASNMU (under President Dan Pilarski) voted unanimously to approve a resolution which stated, "In spite of the fact that the [ASNMU] governing board has been broadly lampooned...[we] support the Erisian Liberation Flank's right to publish The...TRUTH without interference...." Gentilini was rejected by the full ASNMU governing board in a 6-4 vote. The position Gentilini applied for remained open. This board would rather have left the seat vacant than fill it with Gentilini.
In February of 1992, after much shakeup in board membership, Gentilini was approved to the Academic Senate (on his 3rd try) by a 11-1 vote. Off-campus Representative and Academic Senator Mark Broemer cast the sole dissenting vote.
Return to Sender
Both Joe Zyble and Gentilini applied for North Wind editor-in-chief in April of 1992. Gentilini said in a memo dated September 11, 1992: "I gladly withdrew...and stepped aside for Mr. Zyble, even encouraging his appointment." Zyble warned the board of directors that there was a chance he would be hired as editor of the UP Catholic (a local Catholic newsletter) and that if he was he would resign as North Wind editor. Gentilini then applied for managing editor, a position that went to Paul Stieber. Joe Zyble said Gentilini was "more valuable as a writer" and offered him a position as a senior reporter (not even a position as assistant news editor or news editor).
2 months later, with Gentilini downstate for the summer, Joe Zyble got the UP Catholic job and resigned from the North Wind as promised. The North Wind board of directors, minus Gentilini, met to appoint Paul Stieber as Editor-in-chief. In Gentilini's September 1992 memo he stated, "I believe I was explicit in that if Mr. Zyble was awarded the position he sought...my application for Editor-in- chief would be reinstated.... Moreover...I was still Vice- Chairman of the board of directors. I should have automatically been informed that a meeting was being arranged...." White claimed he did not have Gentilini's correct address. As a 20-year-old junior, Paul Stieber became the youngest person on record to ever be Editor-in-chief of the North Wind.
In September of 1992, after Gentilini's memo, ASNMU rejected Gentilini's proposed revisions to the North Wind by- laws, even though the board of directors was in favor of these changes. Coincidentally, these changes included a change that decreased the number of credits a graduate student would need to carry to be eligible to serve on the board. Rejecting this change precluded part-time graduate student Gentilini from serving on the board. Gentilini reapplied for the North Wind board of directors in January of 1993 (with plenty of credits to make him eligible) and was turned down. Another board had decided to leave a position vacant rather than fill it with Gentilini.
Once More into the Breach
Gentilini applied for and was interviewed for editor-in- chief of the North Wind position again in April of 1993. Gentilini said that during this interview, he criticized the North Wind's handling of the ASNMU elections. Stieber supposedly asked Gentilini how he would deal with criticism. Stieber had called his critics, "venomous and immature."
Gentilini said "I welcome criticism. All of my career, I've sought more criticism than I've ever received." Gentilini claims he made it clear to the board that he wanted any and all concerns about his ability to be brought out in the open.
Joe Hall was given the post, a move that some say was not altogether popular. Regardless, Hall, formerly Stieber's boss and then his subordinate, was now Stieber's successor. Who's vendetta is it, anyway?
A few days later Gentilini interviewed with Hall for the position of managing editor. Gentilini claims that, after Hall arrived late for the interview he told Gentilini that he had filled all the editorial positions except the post of managing editor. In normal hiring, one would logically hire from the top down. So, if Gentilini is right, Hall was either hiring backwards or he was lying.
Gentilini says he told Hall during this interview, "someone asked me 'Why don't you simply go back on staff as a reporter?'... I am a graduate student who has gone through virtually the entire journalism program with good marks...who has experience in virtually every area of the university from the residence halls to ASNMU to the Academic Senate and to top it all off--4 weeks ago I turned 27. The bottom line is I'm just too damned old to start over from the bottom."
Gentilini then claims Hall brought up The...Truth, saying that he understands the humor except for the jokes about the North Wind which he apparently feels are unwarranted. Gentilini also said that Hall referred to a "vendetta" against Stieber by this paper.
Gentilini said that he defended his involvement saying: "A talented freelance writer could submit articles to both Time magazine and Spy magazine."
Gentilini then said Hall "was afraid I 'would turn the North Wind into The...TRUTH.'" Hall then, according to Gentilini, expressed concern that Gentilini didn't know many people on staff.
The position eventually went to Dana Perrow who was features editor last semester and coincidentally, lived in Hunt Hall for 4 semesters when Hall did.
Weasel-ocracy
One must question this collection of facts. It is probable that those involved felt they were doing nothing wrong.
They were just playing a game. Isn't that what college politics is? Certainly, but eventually the line between the real world and the university blurs and players move into the real world. At which point should one add the dimension of ethics to the game? If one does not add ethics to the game while it is a game, can we expect them to suddenly add them when the game becomes real?

HOUSEKEEPING
This is a big semester for Project E*L*F. Not only are we for the first time doing a major investigative journalistic piece, but this semester is the fifth anniversary of The...TRUTH ! We're celebrating with new buttons (available for $1 from any member of the Erisian Liberation Flank) new T-shirts (available for $9 from the Branch Erisian Compound on the outskirts of Ishpeming) day sponsorship on Public Radio 90 (September 21, 1993) and coming soon, The Best of The...TRUTH (reprinting some of the best stories from past issues and for the first time ever--the history of Project E*L*F)!
Some of you may be saying that the lead story is long, boring and detailed. We say--get bent! Do you have any idea what a pain in the ass this was to put together? Plus now we've probably pissed off just about every person with any sort of clout on the whole campus. Forget it, you little ingrates, we'll never do it again. We're all sick of this paper anyway and can't wait to graduate. Which reminds us-- have you ever wanted to edit an issue of The...TRUTH ? Well now you can. Yeah, you're saying, "Ooh, you mean I can alienate the whole campus, trash my GPA, and waste valuable weeks of my youth--just like you?" Yes, it's true! We're accepting proposals from anyone who wants to be a guest editor! Your stories, your agenda, your sense of humor, and you get to pay the printing costs too! Just like us! Isn't that great?
Of course, the eagerly awaited, long overdue, and desperately needed Project E*L*F BBS (ERISlink) has been indefinitely shelved through no fault of the head of our cyberpunk group the Legion of Digital Discord but we still have our little conference going on MUSIC and you can still access it by typing "/conf truth" on the command line when you enter the MUSIC system. Ask a lab operator for help.
It's just a darn good thing we've got that too, 'cause the WILDCAT DEN is all torn up due to the much ballyhooed UC Renovation and we've been forced to eat lunch in the Cohodas Lounge. Actually, we went to what's left of the DEN the other day and amazingly enough the service has gotten even worse (we didn't know it was possible). So the only way we can meet to compare notes these days is through the electronic conference.
The Project E*L*F address is as always: Box 43 Student Activities Office/N.M.U./Marquette, MI 49855. Lately however, the Editor has been living there (something happened to his off-campus apartment, we don't know what 'cause every time we ask he just starts drooling and all he can say is, "Spackle!" so please be considerate and don't mail anything large.
RANDOM POOP
Not in the North Wind: Under the leadership of "Buffalo" Bill Ball and Kulishek NMU kicks Columbia's ass at Model U.N. History dept. scorecard: Defonso has been called back from inactive reserves. Stenkampf and Meier both retired (look for them to be inducted into the hall of fame). Slavcheff did not make the cut, contract not renewed.
Reobke-Barrens back in history full time. Gene Jones traded for Jean Choate and a first round draft choice next year.
Speaking of goings: Donna Pearre--gone! The dust still hasn't settled, so we're not sure what the exact circumstances surrounding this are. I'm sure we'll have complete facts (or a least a plausible rumor) next issue. Marcia Moody resigns in disgust, I don't know what you think, but that seems like a REALLY BAD OMEN.
Speaking of bad omens, Larry Alexander and Patty Verstrat are T.A.'s.
On the music scene, I know it's too late for us to take back all the nice things we've said about Plaid Billygoats-Snorklepuppy- Orange Whip but since they've gotten a contract to play exclusively at Ody's they've really started to suck. Nathan Lyle's Christian heavy metal band still doesn't have a lead singer but at least it has a name now. Those wishing to try out for Reality Shock can call reality expert Nathan at 475- 7837.
On the other hand, The Underground is a new magazine that's starting up to print sexual adventures of people in the UP. We didn't know people in the UP had sexual adventures. Their address is :The Underground/ 312 Quincy Str./Hancock, MI 49930
In order to boost membership of the Alumni Association, NMU's having an alumni sweepstakes. Looks like the alumni can't afford the membership dues. Maybe that's because so few NMU alumni have jobs.
Bob Glenn gets "It." In the hiring process to replace Rowena Jones, Bob Glenn voted for David Mitchell over 2 other equally qualified female candidates who both had similar expertise to Jones. Glenn, who once called feminist writing "trendy literature" voted for Mitchell because he feels we need to get "multicultural." The still largely conservative English Dept. is presumably giving Glenn the fisheye, waiting to see what this born-again radical will do next.

SAMI THE JERK: WHO PUT THE "NO" IN NORTH WIND?
"You're sharpening stones/ Walking on coals/ To improve your business acumen." --R.E.M.
Are we living in a world where people skills mean more than job skills? I remember when people skills were just a nice little extra "something" to bring to an interview. Now if you can't empathize, validate, nurture, and heal--you can't get hired at Burger King! Sure it's nice to work with people who use Politically Correct speech, look out for each others inner children, and bond but CAN WE GET A LITTLE WORK DONE PLEASE?!
I don't care if an applicant demands that I address him as "your excellency" while standing on one leg and his sex life involves rodents, if he's as capable as Gentilini is--who cares? Plus, like my dad used to say, "assholes serve a purpose." Look at Ed Niemi. We need him. He performs. O.K. sure, we have that established but what about the North Wind and ASNMU? Well, there's two other problems with the "Whoever has the most People Skills is in Charge" way of running things:
- There's a thin line between People Skills and Brown Nosing. Sure, he may have People Skills when he's in the interview, but that doesn't mean he'll be friendly and helpful when he's on the phone with an irate customer. Why should he? He's already got the job. Especially here at NMU, they sure aren't worried about getting fired. But wait until somebody in a position to get him ahead comes in and watch him go. I am not talking about Greg Rathje, necessarily.
- You could hire anyone you wanted to and justify it by saying: "I thought he had excellent people skills." Which means you can hire all your friends! "Yay! we'll have a big party down here all semester long!" People Skills are difficult to define and it's easy to abuse as a justification for hiring somebody. I am not talking about Joe Hall, necessarily. I disagree with the tone and conclusion of the story. The conclusion would leave the reader to believe that this is an aberration. I say, it is the American Way. Hire your friends, as long as they're not freaks, but then again, if you had any friends that were freaks, it would mean you're a freak too, and we wouldn't have hired you, so that's O.K. Does that sound a little like fascism to you, too? I am not talking about NMU, necessarily. But as long as we brought it up, why does NMU have so few minorities? Do you really wonder, or do you know the answer to that? NMU's had a lot of trouble getting and keeping minority faculty, minority staff, and even minority administrators (Marcia Moody is just the most recent one, check back 8 years or so, you guys down at the Wind, I'm not going to give you any more clues but it won't be hard to spot). Even ASNMU and the North Wind are mostly straight, white men. If they were all forty years older they'd look like the Senate.
In corporate Amerikkka you agree to let other people step in your face in exchange for an opportunity to step in the face of the people under you, but you do it with impeccable People Skills.
What if you don't want this? Well, you could always start your own paper, student government, business, what-have-you. More and more people are dropping out of corporate Amerikkka in favor of doing their own thing. Project E*L*F has never had a recruiting drive. Gentilini didn't express interest in working with us until after Hubbs had brushed him off. The North Wind does all our recruiting for us. The C.I.A. has to recruit. I.B.M. has to recruit. The Church has to recruit. The counter culture never recruits.
